Privacy Policy

Last Updated: May 5, 2026

Tabster ("we", "our", or "us") is a bill-splitting app that helps groups of people divide expenses fairly. This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, and your rights regarding your data.

Information We Collect

  • Account information: Name and phone number used to create your account, authenticate you, and send SMS messages related to receipt splitting.
  • Receipt images: Photos of receipts you upload to split with others.
  • Payment handles: Venmo usernames you optionally provide to facilitate payments.
  • Contacts: If you grant permission, we access your contacts only to help you find friends already using Tabster. We do not store your contacts.
  • Friend connections: When you send or accept friend requests, we record the connection between your account and your friend's account.
  • Privacy preferences: Your default privacy setting for new receipts and trips, and your per-receipt or per-trip visibility choices.
  • Usage data: Basic app usage information to improve the app experience.

How We Use Your Information

  • To provide and operate the Tabster service
  • To process and display receipts you upload
  • To connect you with friends and split bills
  • To send push notifications about trip and payment activity (only if you opt in)
  • To surface your receipts and trips to friends you've connected with — only when every participant has set that receipt or trip to Friends visibility
  • To improve app performance and fix bugs
  • To send transactional SMS text messages in response to receipts you text in to our number, including a link to the processed receipt and item-selection page

How We Share Your Information

We do not sell your personal information.

Mobile information and SMS opt-in data are not shared with third parties or affiliates for marketing or promotional purposes. See the SMS Communications section below for additional details on how we handle phone numbers and SMS data.

We share data only in the following cases:

  • With other Tabster users you've added directly to a trip or receipt
  • With your accepted friends, when you and every other participant on a receipt or trip have set it to Friends visibility (see Friends and Social Visibility below)
  • With service providers (Supabase for database/storage, Vercel for hosting, Twilio for SMS messaging) who help us operate the app
  • When required by law

Friends and Social Visibility

Tabster lets you connect with other users as friends and optionally surface a summary of your receipts and trips to them.

Friend requests are mutual. You and another user must both accept a friend request before either of you appears on the other's friends list. Removing a friend severs the connection on both sides.

Default privacy. Your profile has a default privacy setting — Friends or Private — for new receipts and trips. New tabs and trips are created at this default; you can override the setting for any individual receipt or trip via the in-app toggle.

Consensus visibility. A receipt or trip only appears in your friends' feeds when every participant has set their visibility to Friends. If any participant has it set to Private — or is a guest (not signed in to a Tabster account) — the receipt or trip stays hidden from friends. Your setting only affects your side; you can never make something visible on another participant's behalf.

What friends see on a public card. When a receipt or trip is visible to your friends, they see only summary information: the place or restaurant name (or trip name), the date, the total amount, names and avatars of other participants, stylized cover artwork or any group photos the creator added, and the number of likes and comments. They do not see the original receipt photo, the line items, who claimed which item, or per-person settlement amounts.

Changing your mind. You can revoke Friends visibility for any receipt or trip at any time via the toggle on that item — the card disappears from friends' feeds immediately. You can change your profile default at any time; existing receipts and trips keep whatever setting you'd already chosen.

SMS Communications

Tabster operates an SMS-based receipt-splitting service. When you text a receipt image or link to our number, you initiate the conversation and consent to receive a transactional SMS reply from Tabster containing a link to the processed receipt and item-selection page.

The only messages you will receive from Tabster are transactional responses to receipts you text in. We do not send marketing or promotional SMS messages.

Message frequency depends on your use of the service — you receive a reply each time you text in a receipt. Message and data rates may apply, depending on your mobile carrier plan. You can reply STOP at any time to opt out, or HELP for assistance. After replying STOP, you will receive a confirmation message and no further messages from Tabster.

No mobile information will be shared with third parties or affiliates for marketing or promotional purposes. Your mobile phone number is only shared with Twilio, our SMS infrastructure provider, for the purpose of delivering messages to you. We do not sell your mobile phone number or your SMS opt-in data.

Data Storage & Security

Your data is stored securely using Supabase. Receipt images are stored in private cloud storage. We use industry-standard security practices to protect your information.

Your Rights

You can delete your account and associated data at any time by going to the settings page when logged in, completing the delete button action, and confirming deletion. You may also revoke camera, photo, or contacts permissions at any time through your device settings.

You can also remove or block friends at any time from the Friends page list, change the privacy setting on any individual receipt or trip via the toggle on that item, or change your default privacy in your profile settings.

Children's Privacy

Tabster is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of significant changes through the app or by updating the date at the top of this page.
